    Dressing While Pregnant- Lesson: Denim

    Dressing While Pregnant- Lesson: Denim

Jeans matter, therefore, maternity jeans matter, dare we say, twice as much?

We are obsessed with fashion and making women feel fabulous, and one cannot possibly do that today without being obsessed with denim. Emily, our buyer, is obsessed with making sure that we have a tons of comfortable bottoms to choose from.

Finding a few good, solid pairs of jeans makes a huge difference to the way you walk into a room.  Just our opinion, but since countless women have walked out of the shop in their new jeans, 3" taller than when they walked in, that opinion is based on experience. Okay.  Maybe not 3" taller, but definitely taller. And happier.

Where to begin?  Start with a good basic. This is our single most popular primary pair, which doesn't mean that it's everyone's first, it's just insanely soft, skinny and comfy, and a good, basic everyday wash.

Okay, we lied, there are two popular pairs. Most moms do the black shadow as well, because, well, when they put one pair on, and make some comment along the lines of "OMG! These are amazing." they realize that one pair is not enough, and grabbing the same amazement in black is just their next move.

So, if you are one of those people who will only rock a basic skinny, then grab a couple of them.  You will not regret it. You will wear them as many times in the course of just one pregnancy as you wear one pair for years not pregnant.

And then there's the trip back down, which these are all perfect for.  Grab a belt and you're good to go for the year after delivery- which is what a mom of 3 advised a friend to plan on.  The friend was much relieved.  She actually came in to buy a new pair of our jeans with her 3 month old, and she is hardy the first one to do that.

An IMPORTANT note on FIT: Get jeans that fit the way you like your jeans to fit before you were pregnant.  REMEMBER-denim relaxes out, you want jeans that make your butt look good, not saggy!  This does not mean that you should buy jeans that feel painted on, or that don't feel comfortable.  It just means that you should not buy the next size up because you're pregnant-that's what those stretchy side panels are for!

Talk to the person fitting you, ask them for their advise, different jeans do relax out differently, and the person helping you should have that information.  Then, listen to your mom gut, and get the ones that feel best to you.  This is a good lesson that will serve you well in parenting-collect all the info, know what the experts say and then listen to your gut.  There is not a right or wrong, just doing the best that you can with a changing situation-in this case, your body. If your jeans get too tight, save them for the trip back down.  Don't beat yourself up or stress out.

Feeling too tall?  Tuck them into a pair of boots or booties, or, really, ankle length is never bad, and particularly when pregnant, if you still have your ankles?  Celebrate them! Show them off!  Got cankles? Hello booties.

Feeling short?  Please do not buy clothes, denim or otherwise, based on length.  But clothes that fit, and then meet your local dry cleaner-they can hem with ease if you want a hem.

Or, no matter what your height, emulate Gwen Stefani- cuff 'em!

Jeans matter.  Take care of mama and spend the time and money that you can manage getting jeans that rock the bum and the bump.  You're worth it.

    Comfort Dressing

    Comfort Dressing

Some days, we all need a little comforting. The world is wide and wonderful in so many ways, and, as discussed with a mama 2b the the other day, it is important not to lose sight of that.

    And to laugh and smile.

    don't sweat it, smile:)

This mama was trying to get her head around the tragedy going on in the world around her, and was feeling like all she wanted was "comfort food and comfort dressing".  So, she was bringing on the mac and cheese big time apparently, and was in for a duplication of the outfit that she was wearing, in different colors, "I just can't seem to really change my clothes every morning, and my husband, bless him, said that I look beautiful, but suggested that maybe the shop had these pieces in other colors? Ha!"

This is  what she wore in:

This is what she wore out -apparently she really had been wearing the same thing for 3 days and knew that her sanity and a degree of happiness could be achieved just by changing clothes.  "Plus, my husband will know that what I keep saying is true, I really am okay-hormonal, weepy, tired, but, caring about what i look like, and changing clothes might make him believe me!"

And, at the risk of pushing it, we suggested a pair of the softest jeans ever, and she admitted that they were the softest ever, and maybe "real pants" in her closet would not be a bad thing, so, she added those and went home, saying that she felt like they should go out to dinner now that she had changed her clothes!

Fashion means different things to different people.  What makes you feel good is personal, and can change from day to day, but clothes do matter, they do make most people feel better.  We get to witness this every day.  And we are thankful.

Sale Styling - Wow Mom & beyond

Sale Styling - Wow Mom & beyond

Sales are great, and sometimes for the life of me I am baffled by what ends up on sale, at Mom's the Word and elsewhere.  And, sometimes, I'm not;) When I was in college my mom used to send me these great items that "used to be $158 and were marked down to $9.99!  Can you imagine!?"  Sometimes.  Yes.  It made total sense that they were marked down that much.  Other times, I was baffled, and thrilled.

Our Summer Sale is on now, and moms are having fun with it! Summer is here for 3-5 months in the US, depending upon where you live.  My favorite Sale Styling options today, which can and should be worn for years to come, not just with a bump:

    silk top+distressed whte jeans+cropped cardi=fab

    =HAPPY MOM!

(Cardi is optional, just a nice addition which can be worn with everything. Styling tip: do not button the cardi-leave it open.))

Personally I am the type of person who loves finding something at Goodwill for $5.99, but also will way full price for something that is way more, but that I love.  If I pay $5.99 and wear it once, then I'm good. If I pay over $150 then I know that I will wear it for years to come.

When pregnant, you are almost guaranteed to wear everything that you have many many times in the course of a pregnancy, and beyond-even if beyond is only for the trip back down. All of the pieces above can truly be worn forever.

Nursing?  Throw a cami under the silk top

-lift silk top up, pull cami down, nurse discreetly, chic-ly.

    Happy summer to all!

    Top o' the Morning...

    Top o' the Morning...

...and the afternoon, and the evening.  These tops just make life that much easier and chic-from 9 weeks, to 9 months, to waaay beyond. There's at least one for everyone, most people grab more than that- then grab another every time they come in.

Love the Nicole with it's Tiffany glass-esque floral and fly-away back detail.

Throw her on over a black pencil skirt or a pair of jeans and you are dressed. Love that.

Mandy is the go-to summer fave of working mama's everywhere.

Ah, Grace!  Feminine and floral and out the door you go.

Nisha is simple, sophisticated and elegant, with an exposed zipper on her back just for added style.

There isn't a closet out there that doesn't love her.

Last but not least, this pintuck detailed, button front top sprayed with teeny hearts is the perfect splash of summer.  Over white jeans for summer?  Uh huh.

While none of these pieces are officially "bumped" they all go the distance.

And, while not officially "nursing", grab a MOM cami, layer it underneath- lift top up, pull neck of cami down-discreet, chic nursing achieved!

Mom made happy. Morning, noon and night.

It's a good way to start your week.

Pregnant Moms on MOM Staff; Gloria

Pregnant Moms on MOM Staff; Gloria

We love to have pregnant women on staff!  Gloria had managed our Palo Alto store for years, and announced her pregnancy at the grand opening of our Los Angeles shop.  We all cried happy tears. Last year we had Gloria, our Italian mama 2 be, who arrived almost daily inspired by a look that she'd found and duplicated from her MOM wardrobe.  So much fun!  We just had to take pictures!Gloria in our Men's Wear Coat, some sweater that we can't remember, our skinny ankle pants in black, toting her yet-to- be-used-for-diapers bag! Everything so good that it is back again this year.

Menswear all the way! Paired with destructed jeans? Oh yeah! That mama had it dialed in on the daily!

Our super soft, super hip leather patch moto inspired jacket over...hmmm..what was that top? Just another classic piece that she still wears with 10 month old Matthew in tow-and now she gets to use her diaper bags!!
