If I had it to do over again...collect cord blood or not collect?

Apparently it is National Cord Blood month.  We have been courted by multiple cord blood companies.  I used to think that if I had it to do all over again I'd fork over the $2K and the annual fees, because peace of mind is invaluable.  However, in the back of my mind I kept wondering why we were being courted?  Why if this was such a great thing wasn't it just done for all babies?  I just did a teeny tiny bit of research, and found this (Thank you Wikipedia, a non-profit that we support.) :
  • Private storage of one's own cord blood is unlawful in Italy and France, and it is also discouraged in some other European countries.
  • The policy of the American Academy of Pediatrics states that the odds of using one's own cord blood is less than .00075%
So, it's a smart business this Cord Blood Collection.  But not the kind we want to partner with at this time. There are so many things that I would have done differently if I had it to do all over again.  But, I can't.  My boys are all grown up, healthy and fabulous.  I did it all as best I could, and I did alright, and I was human.  I proved to them that no one is perfect. Ha! Thank goodness they know that I guess? ;) If I had this to do over again?  I would contact www.bethematch.org and see if they wanted my baby's cord blood. Pay it forward. That's how we are going to make the world the place that we want it to be for our children. That's our belief.
